Disney’s Hollywood Studios can be one of the hardest Walt Disney World parks to plan.
It is not because the park is too large. Hollywood Studios is more compact than some of the other Disney parks. The issue is that many of its most popular attractions build long waits, the live shows run at set times, and your Lightning Lane return times may pull you in several directions.
You may also have very different priorities within the same family. One person may care about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Someone else may be focused on Toy Story Land. Another person may want thrill rides, live shows or classic Hollywood details.
A good Hollywood Studios plan is not about following the same attraction order as everyone else. It is about deciding what matters most to your family and building the day around those priorities.

Should You Wait to Visit Hollywood Studios?
Hollywood Studios has changed many times, and Disney will continue adjusting its rides, shows and themed areas.
That leads some families to ask whether they should wait until every announced project is finished before visiting.
Our answer is no.
There will almost always be something new under construction or another change on the way. Families could have delayed trips for years while waiting for Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge or later projects to open.
Hollywood Studios already has major rides, several live shows, themed dining, character experiences and a nighttime show. Disney currently lists attractions such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Toy Story Mania!, Slinky Dog Dash, Tower of Terror, Star Tours and several stage shows.
The better question is whether the park’s current lineup matches your family’s interests.
What Is the Main Theme of Hollywood Studios?
The park can feel less connected than Magic Kingdom or EPCOT because its lands look very different from one another.
The original theme centers on classic Hollywood, movies and entertainment. You can still see that along Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard.
Disney has since expanded the idea by placing guests inside movie settings. Instead of only showing how movies are made, the park places visitors in Andy’s backyard in Toy Story Land or on Batuu in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
That means Hollywood Studios can appeal to several groups:

Starting on Sunset Boulevard
Ryan often starts on Sunset Boulevard with Tower of Terror. This can work well for thrill-ride fans who want to complete Tower of Terror and another major attraction in that area before moving deeper into the park.
Stephanie is less excited about Tower of Terror, but her family may still start there when it is a priority for her daughter. That is an important planning point: the best plan is often based on the whole family, not only the person making the schedule.
Starting With a Family Ride
Families with younger children may prefer to begin near Toy Story Land or Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Toy Story Mania! has no height requirement, making it easier for many family groups to ride together. Slinky Dog Dash has a 38-inch height requirement, while Rise of the Resistance, Star Tours and Tower of Terror require riders to be at least 40 inches tall.
Check every child’s height before the trip rather than learning about a restriction at the ride entrance.
Starting in Galaxy’s Edge
Star Wars fans may want to begin with Rise of the Resistance. However, this choice should be based on current wait times, Lightning Lane options and how important the attraction is to your group.
Rise of the Resistance is more than a standard ride. It uses several parts and ride systems to place guests inside a conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.
Because it is a major priority for many guests, it can also take a large part of the morning when the standby line is long.
Is Lightning Lane Worth It at Hollywood Studios?
Hollywood Studios is one of the parks where a paid Lightning Lane plan can have a clear effect on your day.
Several popular rides may carry long waits at the same time. Without a plan, you can spend a large share of your park day standing in line for only a few attractions.
That does not mean every family must purchase every Lightning Lane option. The value depends on:
The time of year
Your budget
Your attraction priorities
Whether you have young children
How long you plan to remain in the park
Your tolerance for standby waits
Group Your Return Times by Area
One of our strongest tips is to group return times in the same part of the park when possible.
For example, try to place Toy Story Land selections close together rather than visiting Toy Story Land in the morning, leaving for Sunset Boulevard and returning to Toy Story Land later.
The same idea applies to Galaxy’s Edge.
Hollywood Studios is easier to cross than some other Disney parks, so an imperfect schedule will not ruin your day. Still, less backtracking means more time for attractions, meals and breaks.
Should You Pay for Rise of the Resistance?
For families who consider Rise of the Resistance a must-do attraction, separate paid access may be worth considering when offered.
The main benefit is not simply entering a shorter line. It may also reduce the risk of spending a long time in standby only to face a delay or interruption.
No attraction is guaranteed to operate without delays. However, assigning a return time to an important ride can make the rest of the day easier to plan.
Stephanie considers Rise of the Resistance a must-do experience and is willing to pay for shorter access because of how important it is to her family’s Hollywood Studios day.
Do Not Skip the Hollywood Studios Shows
Many guests focus so heavily on rides that they overlook the park’s live entertainment.
That is a mistake, especially on a hot Florida afternoon.
Hollywood Studios has several indoor or seated shows that can provide a needed break from heat, sun and standing in attraction lines. Current Disney listings include For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration, Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! and The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure, though schedules and offerings can change.
Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
You do not have to be a major Frozen fan to enjoy this show.
The royal historians add jokes and comic timing that work for both children and adults. Some parts may vary slightly based on how the performers respond to each other and the audience.
This show is popular, so do not plan to arrive at the last second during a busy travel period.
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular
Indiana Jones is a good choice for guests who like action, movie effects and behind-the-scenes details.
At quieter times, you may be able to arrive close to showtime. During spring break, holidays and other high-attendance dates, plan to arrive earlier.
Use Shows as Part of the Plan
Do not treat shows as something you will see only when there is extra time.
Look at the show schedule early in the day. Then fit one or two shows between attraction return times.
This helps prevent the common Hollywood Studios problem of reaching the afternoon tired, hot and unsure what to do next.
Best Places to Eat at Hollywood Studios
Hollywood Studios dining opinions can be strong. The best choice depends on whether you want speed, atmosphere, familiar food or a longer air-conditioned break.
Backlot Express
Ryan often chooses Backlot Express for a quick meal.
It has familiar food and can be a practical stop near Star Tours. It also works well when the main goal is eating without taking too much time away from attractions.
Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo
Docking Bay 7 is a stronger match for guests who want something different from standard burgers, pizza or chicken tenders.
It also keeps Star Wars fans inside the setting of Galaxy’s Edge.
Disney currently lists both Backlot Express and Docking Bay 7 among the park’s quick-service choices.
Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant
Stephanie likes Sci-Fi Dine-In for lunch.
Guests sit in car-shaped booths inside a dark drive-in theater while old science-fiction clips play on the screen. It can be a fun break from the heat and a memorable choice for children.
The dark setting may make conversation harder, and some seating arrangements place family members in rows rather than facing each other. That is worth considering for groups that want a social meal.
Also, check the drink description before sharing your milkshake with a child. Stephanie learned that lesson when her daughter began drinking a shake that included alcohol.
50’s Prime Time Café
50’s Prime Time Café serves American comfort food in a setting based on a mid-century family home.
Stephanie’s favorites include the fried chicken and peanut butter and jelly shake. The playful service style can be fun, but guests who dislike being teased should know what to expect.
Roundup Rodeo BBQ
Roundup Rodeo BBQ places guests inside a Toy Story setting and serves an all-you-care-to-enjoy meal.
It can work well for Toy Story fans and families who want a large meal. However, a heavy meal in the middle of a hot park day may slow some people down.
The Hollywood Brown Derby
The Hollywood Brown Derby is the park’s more upscale table-service choice.
It may fit adults, special occasions and guests who prefer a calmer meal. It generally requires more time and a higher dining budget than quick service.
Is the Fantasmic! Dining Package Worth It?
The Fantasmic! Dining Package combines a meal at a participating restaurant with access to a reserved Fantasmic! seating area.
Disney currently lists 50’s Prime Time Café, Hollywood & Vine, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant and The Hollywood Brown Derby as participating restaurants. The package includes the meal items listed for the chosen location and a voucher for seating in a reserved section. Seats within that section are not assigned.
The package may be a good value when:
You already want a table-service meal
Fantasmic! is a major priority
You do not want to wait as long for a decent viewing location
You are traveling during a busy period
Your family needs a planned break and meal
It may not be the best choice if you prefer quick-service meals, want to keep dining costs low or do not care where you sit.
Disney advises package guests to arrive at least 25 minutes before showtime for the reserved section.
Is Fantasmic! Worth Staying For?
For first-time visitors, Fantasmic! is usually worth considering.
It combines characters, music, water effects and other show elements in an outdoor theater. It also gives the park day a clear ending.
Frequent visitors may not watch it every trip. Ryan estimates that he stays for it on only some of his visits because he has seen it many times.
One issue is that the park may be closed or close soon after the show ends. Do not assume you will have time for several more attractions afterward.
If park hours allow, guests sometimes try to enter a nearby attraction line before closing. Never base the whole day on that possibility because park hours and attraction operations can change.
Underrated Hollywood Studios Attractions
Star Tours
Star Tours is one of the park’s most overlooked rides.
The wait can be lower than the park’s largest attractions, it is indoors, and the scenes can vary. That gives it more repeat value than guests may expect.
Ryan often rides Star Tours more than once for those reasons. Stephanie also considers it underrated because repeat rides may not follow the same sequence.
Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
Frozen is sometimes dismissed as a children’s show. The humor, indoor seating and changing performer reactions make it useful and entertaining for adults as well.
Walt Disney Presents
Guests who enjoy Disney history may appreciate this indoor walk-through attraction. It can also provide a quiet break from crowded outdoor areas.
Is Hollywood Studios a Full-Day Park?
For many families, yes.
Hollywood Studios can fill a full day when your plan includes:
Several major rides
One or two live shows
A table-service meal
Time in Galaxy’s Edge
Time in Toy Story Land
Character meetings
Fantasmic!
Families with very young children, few ride priorities or no interest in Star Wars may finish earlier.
The park can also work as part of a Park Hopper day, but splitting the day creates new timing issues. You must account for transportation, dining reservations and attraction return windows.
Ryan points out that guests can walk between Hollywood Studios and EPCOT through the BoardWalk area. The Disney Skyliner and boat transportation may also connect parts of the EPCOT resort area, depending on current service and conditions.

Do not build the day around someone else’s list of the “best” rides.
A thrill-ride fan, a preschool family and a Star Wars fan should not have identical plans.

One thing they are comfortable skipping
That simple exercise makes it easier to set priorities when Lightning Lane times, weather or ride delays force the plan to change.
