EPCOT Tips: How to Plan a Better Day at Disney World
One of the most common questions families ask us about Walt Disney World is whether EPCOT is actually worth visiting with kids. Somebody's friend went five years ago and said the kids were bored. A Facebook post claims there aren't enough rides. Then someone brings up drinking around the world, and suddenly parents are wondering if they should skip EPCOT entirely and add another Magic Kingdom day instead.
As travel advisors who plan Disney vacations for a living, we think families are looking at EPCOT the wrong way.
EPCOT isn't Magic Kingdom. You're not going to walk from ride to ride to ride all day — but that doesn't make it a half-day park. In fact, one of the biggest EPCOT planning mistakes we see is families underestimating how much there is to do and how long it actually takes to move through the park. Let's talk about how we plan an EPCOT day.
Is EPCOT Good for Kids?
Yes — EPCOT can be very good for kids. The real question is whether your family is planning it based on what EPCOT actually is. If your child expects nonstop thrill rides, you'll want to set expectations. And if your plan is to sprint through three popular attractions, eat lunch, and leave because "there isn't anything else to do," you're going to miss a big chunk of the park.
EPCOT works best when families slow down enough to enjoy the spaces between the major rides. World Showcase isn't just a lap around a lake where adults buy drinks — kids can explore the country pavilions, join activities, meet characters, shop, watch performers, and try foods they'd never order at home. The park also has several attractions that don't get the attention Guardians, Frozen, or Remy do. That's exactly why we push back when someone automatically labels EPCOT a half-day park.
How We Start an EPCOT Day
Here's where Stephanie and Ryan immediately disagree.
Stephanie's Guardians-first plan: If she's entering from the front of the park, Guardians is a major priority. There's no leisurely morning at the resort — there's a park plan, and there's a mission. Ryan would probably like to stop for coffee. Stephanie is already walking toward the next attraction.
Ryan's slower EPCOT morning: His ideal adults-only day looks very different — a relaxed morning at the resort, arriving with just enough time to ride Soarin' before lunch. Living with the Land is another favorite. And then, of course, there's food. Because there's always food.
The point isn't that one plan is correct — it's that the right EPCOT plan depends on who's traveling. A couple on an adults-only weekend shouldn't follow the same itinerary as a family with a princess-obsessed six-year-old.
Should You Rope Drop Remy or Frozen?
This is one of the biggest strategy questions for EPCOT families. Our basic advice: decide which attraction matters more to your family, then use a Lightning Lane strategy for one and rope drop the other.
Your entrance into EPCOT matters too. Families staying near the Skyliner route or in the EPCOT resort area can have a very different morning than a family arriving by bus or monorail. Stephanie is more likely to head toward Remy when entering near World Showcase — she might even add breakfast in France. Coming through the main entrance instead? Her priorities change completely.
This is exactly why we don't love generic "perfect EPCOT itinerary" posts. The hotel you're staying at can shape your park strategy before you even walk through the gate.
Do You Need Lightning Lane Multi Pass at EPCOT?
Maybe. We know that's not the answer people want — they want us to say "always buy this" or "never spend money on that." Disney planning rarely works that way.
Stephanie sometimes skips Multi Pass at EPCOT, because her family doesn't care about every popular attraction. Her daughter doesn't want to ride Frozen. Ryan isn't excited about Test Track. And neither of us is lining up to spend the afternoon recovering from Mission: SPACE. Once you remove the attractions your family genuinely doesn't care about, your Lightning Lane needs can change quite a bit. This is why we tell clients to stop building park plans around somebody else's must-do list — your family doesn't have to ride something just because the internet says it's popular.
Why EPCOT Takes Longer Than Families Expect
Walking. So much walking.
Stephanie learned this on her first Walt Disney World vacation at 14, when her younger brother — a little too big for the small strollers their family was used to — announced partway through their EPCOT day that he simply was not taking another step. He wanted someone to carry him. Nobody volunteered. That memory has stuck with her for years.
Parents often tell us their seven- or eight-year-old hasn't used a stroller in years. That may be true at home — but home doesn't usually involve a full theme park day in Florida after several early mornings in a row. You know your child, but don't let pride about stroller use turn an expensive Disney day into six hours of "my feet hurt."
World Showcase Isn't Just for Adults
Let's retire the idea that World Showcase is only for adults drinking around the world. Families can spend far more time in the country pavilions than they expect.
Let kids explore the countries. Don't rush from attraction to attraction — stop, go into the shops, look at the displays, try a snack, and let kids take part in the activities around World Showcase. One reason Ryan loves the EPCOT festival scavenger hunts is that they give travelers a purpose for visiting each pavilion. Instead of saying "okay, we saw Germany," you actually look around.
Don't miss the entertainment. Stephanie loves Voices of Liberty in the American pavilion. Families focused entirely on rides often miss the live performers and indoor shows — and these can be a lifesaver in the afternoon, when Florida is hot, Florida is raining, and everyone needs a break. An attraction doesn't have to be the most popular thing on social media to be the right thing for your family at 2:30 in the afternoon.
EPCOT Hidden Gems We Actually Recommend
We hesitate to call anything at Walt Disney World truly "hidden" — millions of people visit these parks. But several EPCOT attractions are routinely skipped by families chasing the longest wait times.
Living with the Land — calm, interesting, and a great change of pace from a high-energy park morning.
Figment — Stephanie knows some people hate it. She does not care. Her family rides it every time.
Gran Fiesta Tour — the boat ride inside the Mexico pavilion is easy to miss if you don't know it's there.
The Seas with Nemo & Friends — parents often think of it as a short ride and move on, but don't rush out. The aquarium areas can hold a kid's attention far longer than expected — a perfect example of why EPCOT can turn into a full-day park even when the ride itself is short.
Is EPCOT Good for Meeting Princesses?
It's actually one of Stephanie's favorite parks for families who want to meet princesses — and it's one of those planning details that can change how we build a client's park days entirely. Parents often default to Magic Kingdom when their child loves princesses, but then we talk about which princess the child actually wants to meet, and that conversation changes everything. Plan for your child, not a generic child. If meeting princesses is a high priority, check current character locations and appearance times while you're planning.
Where Should You Eat at EPCOT?
We've talked about Via Napoli more than once on One Slice at a Time, and we're not sorry. Ryan gives it an eight out of eight on the One Slice pizza scale, and Stephanie agrees — lunch, at an off-peak time if you can manage it, is a great time to grab a reservation. Yes, Ryan knows people have very serious opinions about pizza crust structure. He still likes it.
During EPCOT festivals, we may skip a traditional dinner altogether in favor of small portions from around the park — another reason it pays to know what's happening during your trip, since your food plan on a festival day can look completely different from an ordinary one.
And yes — Stephanie is going to La Cava for an avocado margarita. You can tell her it sounds strange. She's heard it. She doesn't care. Try it before you judge her.
Should You Stay for the EPCOT Nighttime Show?
We're both about 50/50 on this. We like the show, but we don't treat it like the emotional end-of-vacation requirement some families place on Magic Kingdom fireworks. If staying works for your family, stay. If everyone's tired and the next morning starts early, leaving isn't a Disney failure. We often look for viewing spots around Canada or between some of the World Showcase pavilions — and your exit plan matters just as much as your viewing spot, since a beautiful show can lose its charm fast if you spend the next hour arguing with an overtired kid.
EPCOT Is Also Great for Adults
EPCOT might be one of Ryan's favorite parks for an adult Disney weekend. Stay near the BoardWalk, Yacht Club, or Beach Club. Visit another park during the day, then come back toward EPCOT for dinner, a festival, a drink, and some pizza. It's a very different trip from taking young kids to Magic Kingdom — and that's part of EPCOT's strength. The park works differently for different travelers.
The Biggest EPCOT Planning Mistake
The biggest mistake is deciding what EPCOT is before you understand what your family actually wants to do.
"EPCOT is for adults." Not always. "EPCOT is boring for kids." Not always. "Everyone needs Lightning Lane Multi Pass." No. "Everyone needs to ride Frozen." Stephanie's daughter would strongly disagree.
Good Disney planning starts with the people taking the vacation. Which characters do your kids love? Will they spend an hour looking at fish? Do they like trying new foods? Are thrill rides important? Does someone in your group need frequent indoor breaks? How far can your kids realistically walk? Those answers build your EPCOT plan — not somebody else's checklist.
EPCOT With Kids: FAQ
Is EPCOT worth a full day with kids?
Yes. Families often underestimate how much time World Showcase, character meetings, aquarium areas, food stops, and lower-key attractions can take.
Is EPCOT boring for toddlers?
It depends on the child and your plan. Toddlers may enjoy Nemo, the aquarium areas, characters, indoor rides, and time exploring World Showcase.
Do kids need a stroller at EPCOT?
Some do. EPCOT involves a lot of walking, and a child who never uses a stroller at home may still get worn out during a long theme park day.
Should I rope drop Remy or Frozen?
Choose based on which attraction matters most to your family and how you plan to use Lightning Lane. Your EPCOT entrance can affect your morning plan too.
Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass worth it at EPCOT?
It depends on your must-do attractions. Families who don't care about several popular rides may find they need fewer paid line-skipping options.
Is EPCOT good for princess fans?
Yes. EPCOT can be a very strong park for kids who want to meet princesses — just check current character schedules while planning.
What's the best EPCOT restaurant for pizza?
Via Napoli is our pick. Ryan gives it eight out of eight on the One Slice pizza scale.
Can EPCOT be a half-day park?
Technically, yes — but families who only spend half a day may miss World Showcase, entertainment, food, and several lower-wait attractions.
Final Thoughts: Don't Underestimate EPCOT
EPCOT is more than drinking around the world. Yes, there are excellent drinks (Stephanie would like to remind everyone about the avocado margarita), but there's also far more for families than most first-time visitors expect.
The mistake is trying to turn EPCOT into Magic Kingdom. Let EPCOT be EPCOT. Slow down. Look around. Try something you've never eaten. Walk into the pavilion shops. Listen to the performers. Let your kid stare at fish longer than your carefully built schedule says they should.
And please, wear comfortable shoes.
